Fencing Class Homework

Footwork and distance

Pay close attention to the footwork, hand and body position of both fencers.

Foil actions
2009 USFA NAC (North America Cup) Div I Foil Bout

Shaito vs. Cohen, Part 1 & Part 2

Pay close attention to how deliberately each fencer sets up and executes their actions (both attacks and parry - ripostes).

Also notice how, once each fencer has the right of way, they attempt to keep their blade from being parried by their opponent.

2008 Call to Arms Women's Foil Final

Period 1 & Period 2

Pay attention to the height difference between the two fencers.  Watch for touches where the shorter fencer manages distance to score from as far away as possible.  In this bout, which works best, being aggressive or being passive?  What things do you notice about the footwork and style of each fencer?

Epee!
2009 USFA NAC (North America Cup) Div I Epee Bout

French (left) vs. Israelian (right), Part 1 & Part 2

Pay attention to the amount of set up that goes into each attempt at an attack and how good distance is kept until an attack is launched.  Also, notice where French positions himself on the strip and how Israelian adjusts to this position.

2010 NCAA Women's Epee Gold Medal Bout

Marghenta Guzzi Vincenti from Penn State is on the right and Noam Mills from Harvard is on the left.Part 1 & Part 2

Watch how Vincenti uses quickness and a long lunge to score most of her touches. Notice how Vincenti moves compared to Mills. Also notice where Vincenti gets impatient in the second video (she's trying to get the last two touches for the win) and changes to trying to attack giving Mills the opportunity to parry and riposte.
